Aboriginal Headstart Program
Have all your education applications in by April 2007
The Headstart program is part of a national initiative for preschool children. This program teaches them Language skills and basic preschool teachings. We have heard from many of the elementary teaches that the children have had an easier transition when entering the school system.

This program is free of charge and can take a maximum of 16 children. Depending on the demand in the community. Children lean how to count, alphabet and colour recognition.

CRITERIA

1. The clientele must be one of the following, INUIT, FIRST NATION or METIS.

2. Must be potty Trained

3. Must be 3-5 years of age

4. Must have an application fully filled out and parents must be involved with the program

1/2 days Only

Monday—Fridays

9:00am—12:00 noon

1:00pm—4:00pm

EDUCATION

 

Education was the most anticipated program arising out of the land claim. The Salt River First Nation created as part of the Treaty Land Entitlement agreement a section that creates a foundation for Youth, Culture and Education.

Costs of sending a member to school:

The average student gets - 500 Bi weekly for 2 semesters $7-$8000
Tuition & Books for 2 semesters is $6—$8000/ Semester

$16 000/ year for every student

We expend a vast amount of money each semester however, there are free pots of money in every province and territory. If you don’t know where you can get funding in your province and territory call us or email education@srfn195.com . We will always provide you with any help that we can offer.

What is Our Kids Our Future is parenting support and information sessions for parents in the community of Fort Smith, NT. This is program is made available because of Salt River First Nation, Department of Health & Social Services & Healthy Children Initiative – Federal Government.

OKOF is a warm and comfortable place to drop in. Our staff are their to help you and provide invaluable information on parenting skills. Each of our staff have completed a multitude of workshops in this area.

We provide nutritious snacks and transportation to and from the program. We have scheduled group discussions and like to hear other parent’s ideas and suggestions for the group. All ideas are appreciated.

What will you take with you from this program?

Staff, are here to provide you with support and an outlet for your questions and discussions on family. We want you to understand that we want your lifestyle to be a healthy one for yourself and child. We provide realistic parenting sessions that will give answers from experienced mothers.

We also have information on nutrition and we can provide some ideas on healthy cooking and well as craft making.

One of the most popular programs is the cooking circle in which you will learn valuable information on budgeting tips, food preparation, and shopping for your family.

Toy Lending Library

The Toy Lending Library is for the child so they can borrow a toy up to 14 days.

Studies have shown that children playing and the interactions with their surroundings is paramount to the child’s development mentally and physically. Playing with toys provides your child with developing his/her motor skills. Further, is also helps in problem solving and development of their imagination.

What’s involved in Borrowing toys

Our toy selection has a wide variety of toys specific to the 0-4 age groups. In order to take out books or toys you must fill out a membership form.

You may take out one toy and a book home for up to two weeks. The Program Hours are as follows
